David’s Story

"You never know what’s around the corner"

A call centre worker, whose debts spiralled due to ill health, couldn’t believe his luck when TV personality Gail Porter knocked at his door to tell him he won’t have to pay back a penny more.

David Harris Lessels, a diabetes sufferer from Brechin, racked up £15,000-worth of debt following surgery to remove two toes meant he was forced to give up his job in a café.

Now he’s looking forward to something people in debt can only imagine – building a nest-egg for the future – after scooping first prize in the Big Debt Payoff competition,

David’s problems began in January 2018 when he contracted an infection and was hospitalised for two weeks, leaving him off work for six months.  Unable to stand for long periods, he could no longer work in the café where he’d be employed for three years.

Explaining more, he said: “Before surgery, I received a regular wage and was in a stable financial position. All this changed when I was out of work and on statutory sick pay because I didn’t have enough to cover the cost of living. Household bills, like credit cards and council tax, kept piling up but I just buried my head in the sand and ignored them.

“When I saw the Big Debt Payoff competition on Facebook, I entered straight away. I was willing to do anything to sort my finances out, although I had no idea I would actually win.”

David, who now works in a call centre in Arbroath added that he is looking forward to being able to put money aside in case he is unable to work in the future: “This experience showed me that you never know what’s around the corner, so it’s important to put money aside for emergencies.

“My debts were so big that it would have been impossible to save. I’m now starting again with a clean slate, it’s a great feeling.”
