Joni’s Story

Second time’s a charm for Big Debt Pay Off winner.

It’s second time lucky for Joni Irvine who has been crowned our 2022 Big Debt Pay Off winner after missing out on the top prize back in 2019.

Joni, a dental nurse from Paisley, first entered the life changing competition three years ago when her almost £16,000 of debt became unmanageable.

Despite being pipped to the post, Joni began to regain control of her finances with the Debt Arrangement Scheme and Carrington Dean.

However, luck was on the 35-year-old’s side this year as she entered for a second time, winning the chance to have her entire £15,591.83 cleared.

“I couldn’t believe it when I got the call to say I had won – I thought it was fake at first,” Joni revealed.

“I was shocked and it took a while to sink in but I’m so happy. Knowing my debt is cleared now is a relief. I know it’s a bad time for most people but it’s come at a good time for me. It gives you something to think about.”

When it comes to debt there’s often a misconception that it’s mainly caused by overspending.

However, the reality for many is that debt isn’t caused by flash designer clothes or fast cars. The cost of living is enough to tip them over the edge.

It’s a tale our 2022 Big Debt Pay Off winner knows only too well.

She continued: “I allowed my debt to slowly creep up on me.

“When I was 18 I got my first credit card and store cards. Over the years I began transferring balances and only making the minimum payments.

“Eventually it got to the point where most of my wage was going towards debts – I didn’t have money for food, bills or anything.”

Joni’s journey into debt happened over a decade before she eventually admitted that she needed support.

“My debt accumulated over a long period of time – over a decade,” she said.
